This tray of aniseeds (smells like liquorice), sugar, and toothpicks was usually passed around at the end of the meal. You take equal amounts of the aniseeds & sugar in the palm of your hand, and then pop them into your mouth as an after-dinner mint. It was a great way to finish off a yummy Indian meal.

The markings around the eyes are partly for decoration, and partly to keep the evil spirits away.
This area had a devastating flood months before we got there which destroyed their rice crop. The water has gone down quite a bit, but is still partially flooded.
If you look closely on the roof, you'll see the drying cow manure which is used as firewood.

Mom Peckham: Good ol' squatty potty. Flushing should help with the smell, at least. :)

Jess: Gee Daniel, what were you about to invade their territory? I think they are giving you the "look"

Daniel: These kids were used to photo-happy tourists, so they had specific poses rehearsed. And of course they asked for money afterward.

Katie: they are totally giving him the "look"

Jess: wow you got an Indian to smile for a picture, that is a feat. :)

Daniel: Yes, I was really surprised when this guy not only smiled for me, but asked me to come take some photos of his son, too. It was interesting to me that in general the people didn't smile much for photos.

Jess: She has one child (see the toe ring)

Katie: guess i better not wear mine anymore... ;)

Jess: I love this picture. Awesome job.

Daniel: Thanks. It kind of happened by accident, actually. But then I realized I really liked it, and went with it.

Joe: Nice! I love those "Autos" (Auto-Rickshaw)

Jess: Except on bumpy road when you are sitting on the metal bar.

Joe: Awesome.

Jess: WOW

Joe: I would LOVE to ride up on the roof of that! Like in Veer-Zaara... Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Jess: I do!

Jess: The black dot is to distract the "evil eye" and any time anyone says anything good about the baby (like they are SO cute) then that goes into the black dot and the evil eye can't use it against them later. Something along those lines.
